Many of us including me awaited this feature and now Microsoft has just announced it. As per the MS roadmap, this will be available from June 2021. so what will happen to Teams data and how its going to work, let’s go deeper to understand it. you can see the feature ID – Feature ID: 70783 here.
Microsoft teams use some core components in the background those are SharePoint, One drive, Exchange, and groups. Most of the data of Teams sit in these core platforms. So, if you have set up multi-geo licensed to your end-users and configured the PDL value (Preferred data location), the teams core service data migration will be automtiaclly from FY21Q3 onwards, and no manual work required. For new Multi-geo setup, you need to sync your tenant and make sure that uses have needed licneces and PDL is defined.
Microsoft Teams Core customer data
- Exchange Online mailbox content (email body, calendar entries, and the content of email attachments)
- SharePoint Online site content and the files stored within that site
- Files uploaded to OneDrive for Business
- Teams chat messages, including private messages, channel messages, and images used in chats
So let’s wait for this to arrive to meet our data residency need. you can read my other post related to M365 Multi-Geo – Beauty and Caveats.
