I was talking with one of my users, She wanted to make sure that newly onboarded users (Office 365 users) should be part of the few yammer groups created for company-wide updates. We know that Microsoft 365 (before office 365 groups) groups are integrated with all office workloads such as Outlook, SharePoint, OneNote, Planner, Power BI, and Dynamics CRM, but its not true with Yammer.
If you want yammer groups/community to be integrated with the Microsoft groups you need to enable Microsoft 365 connected groups. On top of you need to convert groups (old groups) into dynamics groups for managing the auto-update of the user’s membership.
To use dynamic groups as Microsoft 365 connected groups in Yammer, There are three main requirements. let’s talk about them in detail.
Azure AD Premium license
You have to purchase the same amount of Azure AD Premium P1 license for each unique user that is a member of one or more dynamic groups. You don’t have to assign licenses to users for them to be members of dynamic groups, but you must have the minimum number of licenses in the Azure AD organization to cover all such users.
Office 365 Identity Enforcement
Microsoft is pushing the Yammer users to use Azure AAD SSO for login to yammer by July 2021. I have seen that its already started rolling out for few tenants those does not require AAD Authentication. If you are using office 365 identity for all the services then you can simply enable 365 identity enforcement for yammer by yourself before July 2021. Admins can achieve single sign-on (SSO) capabilities for all services in Office 365, including Yammer. For more details read Enforce Office 365 identity for Yammer users. You can see the below image where enforce 365 identity is enabled.
1:1 Yammer Network
If an organization has multiple Yammer networks, then it’s possible to consolidate them to get Group integration. Consolidating multiple Yammer networks in one can be easily managed and administered.
To check the status of the consolidated Yammer network, In the Yammer admin center, go to Network Admin > Security Settings. In the Microsoft 365 (previously known as Office 365) Connected Yammer Groups section, the status for your network will show as Enabled. See the image below.
If your “Office 365 connected Yammer groups” is not enabled, then still you have to work on fixing the Yammer network consolidation with domains. for more details read about Network migration – Consolidate multiple Yammer networks
Once all of the above three pre-requite are met, you can create and use dynamics groups with yammer and update the membership for the yammer community. I hope the above details will to understand the yammer groups/community with Microsoft 365 connected groups.
