Tools for Exchange Server 2003/2007/2010

It’s very hard to remember all URL for tools available and to keep in repository and favorites for the tools required for Exchange Servers. For my ease I have collected some of important source and sharing in this blog post so other can access it. I must say, there would be some more source which I would be missing so please update me.

I have covered tools available for Exchange 2003,2007 and 2010 version provided by Microsoft and some third part (All freeware).

Exchange Remote Connectivity Analyzer Tool

The Exchange Remote Connectivity Analyzer tool, is a Web- based tool designed to help IT Administrators troubleshoot connectivity issues with their Exchange Server deployments. The tool simulates several client logon and mail flow scenarios. When a test fails, many of the errors have troubleshooting tips to assist the IT Administrator in correcting the problem

Microsoft Exchange Best Practices Analyzer v2.8 (ExBPA)

The Exchange Best Practices Analyzer programmatically collects settings and values from data repositories such as Active Directory, registry, metabase and performance monitor. Once collected, a set of comprehensive ‘best practice’ rules are applied to the topology.
Administrators running this tool will get a detailed report listing the recommendations that can be made to the environment to achieve greater performance, scalability and uptime.

Note Exchange Best Practices Analyzer v2.8 should not be used to scan Exchange Server 2007 and Exchange Server 2010. In Exchange Server 2007 and Exchange Server 2010, the Best Practices Analyzer is installed during Exchange Setup and can be run from the Exchange Management Console Toolbox.

Microsoft Exchange Troubleshooting Assistant v1.1 (ExPTA)

The Exchange Troubleshooting Assistant programmatically executes a set of troubleshooting steps to identify the root cause of performance, mail flow, and database mounting issues. The tool automatically determines what set of data is required to troubleshoot the identified symptoms and collects configuration data, performance counters, event logs and live tracing information from an Exchange server and other appropriate sources. The tool analyzes each subsystem to determine individual bottlenecks and component failures, then aggregates the information to provide root cause analysis.

Note :: The Exchange Troubleshooting Assistant should not be used to scan Exchange Server 2007 and Exchange Server 2010. ExFolders

This new tool is replacement of PFDAVAdmin to Exchange 2010. This got changed the name to ExFolders because it no longer relies on DAV, and it’s not just for public folders (even PFDAVAdmin, in its public release, was not just for public folders).

Microsoft Exchange Server MAPI Client and Collaboration Data Objects 1.2.1

The Messaging API is a COM-like API that provides access to the contents of messaging stores. CDO 1.2.1 (Collaboration Data Objects, version 1.2.1) is a package providing access to Outlook-compatible objects through a COM-based API. Using either CDO or MAPI, a program can connect to a MAPI store, and then perform operations against that store.

Microsoft Exchange Server Public Folder DAV-based Administration Tool

Use the Exchange Server Public Folder Distributed Authoring and Versioning (DAV)-based Administration tool (PFDAVAdmin) to perform various management tasks related to public folders and mailboxes. The tool checks the permissions status of each public and mailbox folder and corrects any problems found. The ability to bulk export/import the permissions and replica lists make this tool invaluable in achieving greater productivity in managing public folders. The program can also reports content information of each public folder and mailbox folder such as the number of items in each folder, size of folder and most recent modification date of any item in the folder.

Note: PFDAVAdmin is supported when running with Exchange 2000 Server, Exchange Server 2003 and Exchange Server 2007. In Exchange 2010 ‘ExFolders’ is introduced.

Microsoft Exchange Server WinRoute

Use WinRoute to determine the link state routing information as known to the routing master. The WinRoute tool connects to the link state port, TCP port 691, on Exchange 2000 or 2003 server and extracts the link state information for an organization. The information is a series of GUIDs that WinRoute matches to objects in Active Directory, connectors and bridgehead servers, and presents in human-readable format. This tool should be the first step in troubleshooting routing in an Exchange 2000 and Exchange 2003 mail-handling environment.

Microsoft Exchange Server Jetstress 2010

  1. Extremely helpful post and i have a few questions;

    One my client is having Exchange Server 2007 on Windows Server 2008 R2. At times when he uses the search facility he gets an error saying Domain Not Found. Any particular reason for this and this error is not contant but comes up once or twice a week.

    I will try to get more info from the client on this, he was mentioning something regarding cluster continious replication.

    What will you suggest to start with when it comes to testing and analyzing from the list of tools you have mentioned.

      One more question, the script in Exchange for GAL is hidden and i am unable to find it. Any idea where it might be hiding?

      I am still new and learning alot about Exchange through your blog. Better then reading a dry book, since you are discussing real stuff what an IT Guy faces.
